DISCUSSION WITH DANIEL FRIO
Bullying recently captured national attention through the tragic death of Phoebe Prince and the lesser-reported suicide of Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover. The hurtful and destructive use of power that led to these tragedies speaks to the unjust applications of power that have continually challenged our country's attempt to achieve the “Pledge of Allegiance’s” declaration of " justice for all." From issues of social popularity in classrooms, to the aftermath of Katrina as presented in Zeitoun, and the tragic deaths in Tucson, people need to address their own individual and institutional use of power in order to achieve true social justice.

How we as individuals use our own power on the local level will be the focus of a conversation with Daniel Frio, former WHS teacher. Currently, Dan is working as a Lead Teacher for a course on Human Rights in collaboration with TEC and Suffolk University, and has just finished writing a book, Voices From Inside the Belly of the Beast: Uncensored Words From the Classroom. Sponsored by the Wayland Diversity Network.
