Wayland Free Public Library

About the Waveland, Mississippi Public Library

The Waveland Public Library was renovated and expanded in 2003 to a 5,000 square foot full service library. It opened to the public in August, 2003, and was used a great deal. Just like the Wayland Library they had computers with Internet access, a community meeting room, and a children's area.
The children's area had a dock built in it, with a mural scene of a beach on the wall which you can see in the photo below.

In August 2005 Hurricane Katrina washed through the library building with approximately 33 feet of water, and all the buildings on Coleman Avenue, the main drag of Waveland, washed into it, thereby causing structural damage to the building. All was lost.

Currently, through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the library is housed in a temporary trailer facility that opened to the public March 7, 2007. The first 3 weeks there were more than 500 people coming into the library. The Gates Foundation gave us the trailer, the furniture, the books, the computers and staff for three years. Plans are now underway to rebuild the Waveland Public Library on the same site as before the storm.
